Social media hashtags are a tracking tool for companies and organizations to promote campaigns and initiatives and a way to spread the word about issues and cultural topics. This past summer, trending topics like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge took over social media with the use of a simple hashtag: #ALSIceBucketChallenge.
Over the last couple of weeks a new trending hashtag has appeared on Instagram: #20BeautifulWomen. The #20BeautifulWomen challenge is based off the book “20 Beautiful Women” by Saba Tekle, a compilation of “20 Stories That Will Heal Your Soul, Ignite Your Passion And Inspire Your Divine Purpose.” The challenge is simple: post a selfie that makes you feel beautiful with #20BeautifulWomen and then tag 20 friends to do the same. This new trend is meant to boost the confidence and self-esteem of women all over the world.
Today, more than ever, media can have a negative effect on women of all ages. Caroline Nokes, a member of British Parliament who focuses on body image campaigns, said to BBC News that, “Social media has a huge effect on young people’s body confidence…because it cannot be ignored.” The #20BeautifulWomen challenge is an effort to promote a healthy body image, self-esteem and the internal and external beauty of every woman. It is a way for women to come together as a force and to help others feel good about themselves by nominating others to keep the trend going. The hashtag #20BeautifulWomen is helping women everywhere embrace themselves, their beauty and the beauty of others around them.
