Actress and singer Zendaya Coleman, or more commonly known as “Zendaya,” is a 19 year old girl who loves her body just the way it is. So when Modeliste Magazine published photoshopped images of her body, she was shocked. She announced to her 14.2 million Instagram followers how she felt by posting a collage of two images. The image on the left is the edited picture from her photoshoot, while the image on the right is the unedited version of that same picture. The one on the left had clearly been quite manipulated to make her seem thinner. Her hips, legs and torso all appear to be slimmed and flattened. In her caption, Zendya wrote, “These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows who I am knows I stand for honest and pure self love.”
Modelist Magazine quickly pulled down the edited images and fixed the retouch issues. They then reposted the unedited version of the image on Instagram and stated “…together as a collaborative between myself, Zendaya and her parents, we concluded that the images had been retouched to an extent that was not acceptable and not true to the values and ideals we represent and promote in our publication…” They are currently working with Zendaya to publish unedited photos from the shoot.
So many people say they have issues with photoshopped images, but not many would actually speak out against it. Zendaya stood up for herself and her body in such a way that will undoubtedly inspire women all over the world. It would be extremely wise for celebrities to follow in her footsteps in order to rid the use of photo-shoping to distort body images once and for all.
