By now, everyone is familiar with Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Following Thanksgiving, shoppers nationwide have the opportunity to find perfect (and discounted) gifts for their loved ones. However, #GivingTuesday shifts the focus of materialistic shoppers during the holiday season and encourages the donation of “time, resources, and talent to address local challenges.”

92nd Street Y (92Y) started the holiday four years ago and #GivingTuesday has since grown; 92Y now collaborates with the United Nations Foundation and 30,000 other worldwide organizations spanning 68 countries. Last year alone, NPR reported that #GivingTuesday raised $46 million for charities worldwide.

92Y states that this holiday is “fueled by social media and collaboration.” Several celebrities have stepped in to spread the word about #GivingTuesday. Neil Patrick Harris, Leighton MeesterBoston Bruins and several others used their social media accounts to encourage donations to their favorite charities.

92Y, a community center located in New York City, hopes to “promote individual and family development and participation in civic life.” This new initiative is a small addition to their numerous other services.
