U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders goes the extra mile while speaking at last Tuesday’s rally in Poughkeepsie, NY. Sanders and his campaign staff flourished when executing a rally in just two days.
Marcus Molinaro, Dutchess County Executive, reached out to candidates on Sunday, April 10 and Sanders quickly responded. With the venue, the James J. McCann Recreational Center at Marist College, having a maximum capacity of about 3,500 persons, and his previous campaign in Albany bringing in over 6,000 supporters; they expected a large turnout.
Members of the Dutchess County community, as well as students from Marist, Vassar and the Culinary Institute of America, came as early as 9:00 a.m. to stand in line. Doors didn’t open until 4:30 p.m. and the line for those with reserved tickets wrapped around behind the arena. The line for those without reservations extended throughout the parking lot. The venue was surrounded with Marist security and the Secret Service. The rally was capped at 4,100, not including staff.
With thousands of people turned away, Sanders delayed speaking inside McCann and spoke outside to those that did not get in. Post the impromptu speech, Sanders also spoke to attendees that got placed in the Grey Gym, a separate section inside the McCann Center.
Sanders further showed his dedication and appreciation to Dutchess County by visiting the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site prior to the rally. He also mentioned his visit and his respect for Roosevelt at the beginning of his speech.
Additionally, Sanders and his staff made the executive decision to live stream the video last minute. This decision resulted in more views and pleased those who were unable to see Sanders speak.
Both Sanders’ supporters and those opposed appreciated his acts of dedication, which went above the expected. Sander’s made a lasting impression and it is a crucial time for the public to see him in an outstanding presence. The Dutchess County Community could not have expected more, especially in the tight time frame him and his staff were under.
Bernie Sanders’ rally brought a peaceful crowd with people yearning to hear his ideas and policies, making it an overall smooth and memorable experience at Marist College.
